Title: “Third Molars: When is it wise to treat? An evidence based approach to assessment and treatment”
Presenter: Dr. Elias is a oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He received his dental and OMFS training both in Canada and the United States. His experience, first as Chief OMFS Resident at the University of Toronto and then as an Advanced Craniomaxillofacial Trauma Fellow at the central Level 1 trauma centre in Portland, Oregon, has provided Dr. Elias with extensive experience in the assessment, management, and treatment of complex facial trauma, oncologic surgery, facial reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery, and advanced soft tissue/bony reconstruction. He works with the CVOS Oral Surgery group.
Title: Mental and Physical Wellness: A Work in Progress
Presenter: Dr. Michael Coons is a clinical, health and rehabilitation psychologist. He operates a private practice in south Burlington. The work through his practice is focused on helping individuals and families to optimize their mental and physical wellness. Dr. Coons earned his PhD in clinical psychology at the University of Waterloo. He completed his residency in Medial Psychology at Duke University Medical Centre. He holds a board certification in Behavioural SleEP Medicine with the American Board of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Coons spent the early part of his career in academia on faculty in Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University (Chicago, IL), and the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. In these roles, he developed and tested novel interventions to help people to change health risk behaviours for the secondary and tertiary prevention of chronic illness (e.g., obesity, diabetes). Dr. Coons is a co-author of the 2018 Clinical Practice Guidelines for Diabetes Canada. Clinically, Dr. Coons previously worked as the staff psychologist with the Medical Bariatric Program at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (2015 – 2018). On the personal side, Dr. Coons has a busy family life with 3 young boys. He appreciates the struggles associated with balancing all aspects of professional and personal life, which is always a work in progress!
