One of the main reasons we ask you to bring your retainer to your retainer check appointment (besides to see if it still fits and that you’re wearing it) is to check the chewing surfaces for holes or wear. When we see holes in your retainer it is a sign that you are grinding your teeth during the night. If this has happened we can make you a new retainer but it probably won’t be very long until these wear marks appear again. We commonly recommend you see your dentist to discuss a night guard (or bruxism guard) as these appliances are more durable and built to withstand grinding forces. If they are made for the upper teeth they can also act as a retainer
